Spending becomes compulsive or out of control when it becomes
a peson's way of achieving self-esteem, or of dealing with physical
or emotional distress regardless of any need for the item or service.
Overspending is a serious problem when it results in financial
crisis or causes problems in the relationships.
Those with overspending addictions may need to seek psychological
and debt counseling. This counseling can help to identify and treat
the causes of the overspending and help deal with current debt.
Another source of help is a small informal support group. Society
encourages spending money as a recreational activity and does not
believe that compulsive overspending is a serious problem. Even
those closest to an overspender do not understand why the overspender
cannot just stop spending. A support group can provide both support
and encouragement as the members share experiences and strategies
for dealing with and controling overspending.
