Couples and Money

Marriage and relationships are challenging in many ways, but few things put more pressure on relationships than disagreements about money. Even couples with very different financial personalities can learn to work together.

Set aside time every month to discuss your feelings about money, your financial resources, and your credit situation

Set aside time every month to discuss your feelings about money, your financial resources, and your credit situation. A good time for this is when you won't be interrupted or distracted and aren't too tired.

Write down short-term and long-term financial goals, including savings plans, housing needs and wants, and luxuries such as vacations. Refer to these often to be sure you're making progress towards your goals.

Develop a money management system to make sure that you meet your goals and pay bills on time. Decide which of you will handle the different responsibilities.

Make money decisions together. It's important to remember whoever earns the money doesn't automatically earn the right to decide what to do with it. Making joint financial decisions is the basis for success.

Be prepared to deal with the emotional aspects of money. If you disagree, try to do so calmly, and focus on the facts instead of emotions. Listen carefully and be willing to negotiate a mutually acceptable solution.
