2000 Annual Report
Message from the Chairman
Consumer Credit Counseling Service® of
Central Indiana experienced many changes and successes during the
year 2000. We celebrated our 35th anniversary, and CCCS of CI received
the NFCC Pace Award for Excellence for the most improved agency.
We were also finalists for two additional awards including Outstanding
Counselor recognizing Lora Lu Williams, and Innovative Educational
Program for the creation of "A Woman and Her Money" program.
As times changed, so did Consumer Credit Counseling Service® of
Central Indiana's technology. In addition to phone counseling and
face-to-face counseling, a web site was established which offers
on-line counseling. The web site also allows clients to access
their accounts to gather and confirm information, and consumers
can use the web site to gain information and order brochures and
materials. CCCS of CI staff are also able to submit proposals and
payments to creditors using an electronic system; therefore, decreasing
the amount of time it takes to contact creditors.
Consumer Credit Counseling Service® of
Central Indiana continuously strives to reach Central Indiana with
various services. One way in which we offer these services is through
counseling and educational materials in Spanish. With this service,
we are able to reach a new audience who may utilize our services.
CCCS of CI offers services in twenty-five locations throughout
Central and Southern Indiana. Some locations are collaborative
efforts with other agencies in that area. We were proud to add
two new locations this year, Danville and Lebanon, with the goal
of better serving the public.
These accomplishments have been possible by Consumer Credit Counseling
Service® of Central Indiana because
of the dedicated staff and effective partnerships that improve
the community.
It has been a pleasure to work with the members of the board and
the staff of Consumer Credit Counseling Service® of
Central Indiana with the goal of making a difference in Indiana.

Mission Statement
Provide the best non-profit community service dedicated to delivering
professional consumer credit education, confidential counseling,
and debt reduction programs to all segments of the community regardless
of ability to pay.
Appreciation for Hard Work
We wish to thank Marcele Everest, Executive Director, for her
14 years of dedicated service to Consumer Credit Counseling Service® of
Central Indiana. Under her leadership, a one-office agency with
seven employees grew into a staff of 40 operating in 25 locations
throughout Central and Southern Indiana. Marcele introduced the
agency to technology by obtaining computers that assisted in disbursing
over $16 million to creditors. Her visionary posture allowed staff
and board to expand educational opportunities, offer housing programs
and develop alternative methods of counseling. As Executive Director,
she pushed our local office into national exposure, which led the
agency to become one of the top 50 agencies in the National Foundation
for Credit Counseling. Marcele will be greatly missed, and we wish
her well.

A Client's
Story
Times were rough, and my family and I were having trouble
with our money. My husband and I just had our second child,
who was born 12 weeks premature, and we were getting behind
on our bills. No matter how hard we tried, we were unable
to make the minimum payments. Then a friend told me about
Consumer Credit Counseling Service® of
Central Indiana and we decided to give them a call.
After talking with a certified consumer credit counselor,
my husband and I decided to join the Debt Solver Plan. CCCS
of CI talked with my creditors and worked out a debt repayment
plan which lowered the interest rates and consolidated our
bills into one monthly payment. We still have to manage our
money carefully, but at least we are able to pay our bills
on time.
I am glad my husband and I went to Consumer Credit Counseling
Service® of Central Indiana for
assistance. We are caught up on our payments, and the phone
calls from creditors have stopped. Sometimes unexpected circumstances
occur that you can't financially plan for, but I am glad
CCCS of CI was there to help my family and me. We are now
planning for the future which includes our own home and our
child's college education. |

Support for
Education
CCCS of CI has been helping individuals repair their financial
situation since 1965. As we enter the 21st century, we want
to increase our level of commitment to the community by reducing
the number of individuals for debt repayment. Through educational
initiatives, we hope people will learn to be fiscally responsible
and avoid the issues associated with the bad use of credit
and debt.
To expand educational opportunities, financial support is
required. In the year 2000, the annual appeal campaign brought
in $3,377 and sponsorships totaled $6,200. These funds were
used to enhance our educational materials and conduct workshops.
Sponsorship opportunities such as The Road Home and Money
Management Workshops are just the beginning. In 2001, we
want to broaden our horizon and share our expertise with
more people than ever before. We hope you can support CCCS
of CI through sponsorships, so that we may offer even more
programs to our community.
We thank you for your continued support and commitment and
hope that you will help us expand our educational programs
in the future. Debt and bankruptcy are issues that trickle
into the community and affect everyone. A community that
helps itself is a community worth living in.

Education Highlights
In 2000, CCCS of CI developed a program designed to help
women understand their unique financial needs. The program, "A
Woman and Her Money," outlined the different stages in a
woman's life and the financial needs and challenges for each. "A
Woman and Her Money" was a Presidential Finalist for the
NFCC Pace Award for Excellence in the Innovative Education
Program Category. The agency also had an information booth
at 15 major events around the state including Black Expo
and Fannie Mae Homebuyer Fair, which allowed us to educate
over 30,000 people about money management, using credit wisely,
and buying a home. The most requested topics for presentations
continued to be budgeting and credit problems. In 1999, total
attendance for educational presentations was 18,500. In 2000,
attendance rose to 36,078. |
